The Woodlands Fitness Centre October 2015 Newsletter

Thursday 1st October 2015

What's New?

Hi guys & girls,

So here we are in October. I'll start this month's newsletter by giving a big shout out to some members who have helped me.

So a MASSIVE thanks goes to Rebecca "Chimps" Billingham who has been helping me with painting. And by "helped", I really mean that Chimps has done 99.99% of the painting whilst I've plied her with lattes and crap jokes.

Another massive thanks goes to Sam "Wasps" Smith (not the singer of the atrocious new Bond song) who has helped with a series of janitorial jobs and loaned me her steam cleaner. Apparently the ladies' changing rooms have never looked so clean.

Another thanks goes to Paul Cotterill who has divided each of the changing room benches up into a shorter double sided unit. For those of you who no me quite well, please let me assure that "a shorter double sided unit" is not a euphemism. Sadly Paul doesn't have a nickname as such, at least not one I could write in our newsletter, but if he did have a nickname it would probably revolve around his immense hatred of clouds, drizzle and pretty much everything that makes British weather British.

By the time I get round to finishing this newsletter I would imagine that Chimps is nearing the end of the decorating, by which point she might need to start back at the beginning.

The large dark grey wall in the gym is intended to be a feature wall onto which we will put something interesting. We're discussing stencils or even painting random random breeze blocks, but some of you said it looked like a giant game of Tetris.

Over the last few years I've always found the changing the class timetable to be the most terrifying; trying to assemble a list of classes that suit all of our classes members is no easy task. I've had face to face and text based conversations with a (I hope!) representative sample of members and based on their feedback, I have produced the following:

We print off the timetables in-house so we can make any changes. As previously mentioned, I have been chatting with a couple of freelance instructors so

The class timetable will have descriptions of the class.

15/15/15 is 15 minutes of HIIT, 15 minutes of kettlebells and 15 minutes of core.

HIIT, or high-intensity interval training, is a class in which you give all-out, one hundred percent effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise, followed by short, sometimes active, recovery periods. In past newsletters I have discussed/bored you with Tabata, which is comparable to HIIT.

High-Intensity Interval Resistance Training (HIRT) is similar to HIIT, although as the name implies, it involves the use of resistance equipment including kettlebells.

High-intensity interval resistance training increases excess post exercise energy consumption to a significantly greater extent than traditional resistance training. This class will help you to improve metabolism and, at the same time, muscle mass and strength.

From what I've gathered from observing society, is that we have less leisure time and even less motivation to perform daily exercise, which has resulted in low overall levels of daily lifestyle related physical activity. These HIRT classes will help you elevate your basal metabolism, which will increase fat consumption at rest. I hope you guys see these classes as a fun and attractive alternative to more traditional and time consuming exercise.

There's a lot more I'm working on at the moment but I don't want to give anything away at this stage. These plans and schemes should come together over the next couple of months. Call it a Christmas present.

We always want to know what you think of the Woodlands Fitness Centre - the gym, classes, prices, Personal training, and anything else. Please speak to us at the gym, use the suggestion box or email any feedback and suggestions to the email address at the end of this newsletter.

Thanks,
Giles

Shared Personal training Sessions

This is not a concept I've created but it is something I've started to do a lot more of over the last few weeks.

The concept is simple: if you want to train with a friend or friends, shared sessions are available, as long as your training partner/partners have similar goals and abilities. The shared sessions are ideal if you want to reduce the cost of the session per person, if you get a motivational boost from training with a partner or if you are training for a mutual goal such as a fund raising event, running event or a particular fitness challenge.

These shared personal training sessions are ideal for people wanting to train with a family member or friend. Share the cost of a one-hour Personal training Session at Woodlands Rowsley.

We can train 2 to 4 people at a time. The more who share the session, the less you pay per person. All participants will receive an individual consultation & your workout programme will be tailored to reach your own individual goals, so no need to worry about your friend having different goals to you!

You will get all of the benefits of the 1-to-1 personal training sessions, but with your friends, family members, colleagues. However, we can find someone to share sessions with if you don't know anybody?

We offer 30, 45 and 60 minute sessions 1, 2, or 3 times per week.

Share the session = share the cost of the session!

For more information, please come and speak to Giles.

Get with the programme

Without a doubt the foundation of many troubles people have in losing weight, getting fit and building muscle is not using a programme designed by a professional and sticking to it. I've seen hundreds of people over the years do the same chest, arm and abdominal exercises and literally get nowhere.

Knowing how to exercise safely and effectively is essential to any weight loss program. This is because there are far too many myths surrounding an effective weight loss exercise plan.

A healthy exercise program is essential to any weight loss program as the basis for any weight loss is to create a calories deficient state within the body. The calories deficient state can be achieved in three ways:

1). by reducing the amount of calories consumed (i.e. through the consumption of foods and drinks);
2). through the expenditure of excess calories;
3). or the combination of the two

Losing weight through calories consumed alone is not recommended as it will trigger the fight or flight mechanism within the body, encouraging a reduction in the metabolic rate as well as an increase in the Cortisol Hormone, which is the hormone responsible for fat storage.

The combination of a healthy diet and exercise plan will prevent a drop in the metabolic rate, which will also mean that not only weight loss is achieved at a greater rate, but also that it is easier to sustain the weight loss.

A weight loss exercise program should be viewed as a long-term solution in order to enable a gradual increase in the intensity and therefore reducing any chances of injury.

Working with a programme that utilises the overload principle, periodisation and other facets of an intelligent scientific programme will help ensure progress is constant. You need to work hard but you also need to work smart.

To get booked in for a programme that will deliver results just speak to me or any other member of staff.
