Get functional

Sunday 25th January 2015

When it is time to get back into shape, burn off those pounds that accumulated over Christmas, most people think about just using gym machines. After all, when you walk into your local gym you see all the shiny equipment. How could you not get fit, burn fat and build muscle?

Freeweight, kettlebells and bodyweight exercises are usually a much better choice for your fitness, fat loss and physique building needs. You not only develop an attractive body, but you improve real world performance, flexibility and functional strength.

When you exercise and train, your body makes changes due to the stress placed on it. It will build muscle, burn fat, improve cardiovascular function and more. So you are better prepared for the activity in the future. But here is the thing: the improvements your body makes are specific to the activity. So, when you train on machines in the gym, your body only gets better at training on machines in the gym.

In the real world you are not strapped into an exercise machine and asked to perform reps of an unnatural movement. When you use freeweights, kettlebells or your own bodyweight for resistance, you are training yourself to perform better in the real world. After all, exercise is about movement, not just muscles. And when you use freeweight, kettlebell and bodyweight exercises, you are training your body to move better. And isn't that really the point? Don't you want to perform better in your daily activities as well as look better?

Conventional classes like aerobics, Zumba etc might be adequate for maintaining a reasonable level of health but they don't necessary burn many calories. Some class participants might think they can have a couple of glasses of wine tonight because they've been to a Zumba class. Well those glasses of wine probably have more calories than they've burnt by doing the class.

At Woodlands Rowsley, we focus on you to help you get the results you crave. Woodlands offer 35 classes/group personal training sessions each week to help you get fitter with friends and family. With each session being limited to a small number of clients, each individual can be closely monitored and encouraged and still have the same results as they would from one-to-one personal training. These sessions are included in the monthly membership fee. Monthly membership starts at just £20.
