The Woodlands January 2014 Newsletter

What's New?

Well it's 2014! So that's new! And on that note, I'd like to start by wishing all of our members - past, present and future - a very, very happy new year!

So what is new for 2014 at Woodlands? Well we've been looking at what's going to be popular in 2014 and we've incorporated these into our class timetable and training methods. High Intensity Interval Training (or HIIT as it's know on da streets), functional fitness (including Crossfit type training) and Group Personal Training will continue to be among the fitness industry's hottest trends in 2014. The top fitness trends for 2014 include:

1). High Intensity Interval Training (or HIIT).
2). Body weight training
3). Educated and experienced training professionals.
4). Strength training (not bodybuilding).
5). Exercise and weight loss.
6). Personal training.
7). Fitness programmes for older adults.
8). Functional fitness (including Crossfit type training - which you can do at Woodlands).
9). Group Personal Training

At Woodlands, we're big fans of High Intensity Interval Training (or HIIT), Body weight training, Strength training (not bodybuilding), Personal training, functional fitness and group personal training. And we are of course educated and experienced training professionals.

As everyone who reads the monthly newsletter will know, we're not fans of "steady state" cardio training - as this will cause cortisol levels to increase. Cortisol is the primary stress hormone and has been linked to fatigue, hormonal imbalances, heart disease, excessive blood sugar levels and elevated cholesterol. This cortisol will eat away at your muscle fibres and reverse the effects of your training. You must understand the different between losing weight and losing fat. The truth is you won't look much better unless it's fat you're burning. If cardio burns just fat, then you could just do cardio all day and get lean. But we all know it's not that easy. Cardio training can cause the body to use muscle for fuel and to try to hold on to body fat instead of burning it.

As written in the November and December newsletters, classes were now my priority for the club - and they still are. The new class timetable seems to be working well for you all (nobody has told me otherwise!) and the classes are busy. The only reason we changed the class timetable a great deal was because of Kerrie moving on - but we've been trying to keep as much the same as possible.

We will be delivering over 138 classes per month. The cost of delivering these classes is considerable - but the cost is irrelevant when compared to the pleasure and results these classes give our members.

As we are using freelance instructors for the classes, we have to keep a very close eye on class attendance levels. If a class is regularly undersubscribed, we'll have to replace it with something that'll be more popular.

To ascertain what classes you guys want, we'll need your feedback. This feedback will help us deliver the best class line up the club has ever had. I have no personal preference - I just want a timetable full of busy and popular classes.

Jack's new class, which we've called "HIIT Blast", is based on Tabata, which Metafit and TwentyFour are based on. HIIT Blast - designed to maximise fat loss and fitness in the minimal amount of time - combines traditional bodyweight exercises with the latest high intensity interval training (HIIT) and Tabata techniques. It works on the premise that in order to burn fat, you also need to boost your resting metabolism. HIIT Blast alternates periods of short, intense aerobic exercise with less-intense recovery periods.

I've put 1 x 30 minute Group PT and 1 x 30 minute HIIT Blast classes on during the days between Monday and Friday and 1 x 30 minute Group PT class on Sunday. These Group PT sessions are included in the normal Gym & Classes membership options. Whilst 30 minutes might not seem like a lot, I would urge you all to try one. As with the HIIT Blast, the Group PT classes have been designed to maximise fat loss and fitness increases in the minimal amount of time. The Group PT sessions will combine core exercises with bodyweight exercises, high intensity interval training (HIIT) and full body toning exercises.

These Group PT sessions are part of my ongoing mission to make the Woodlands Fitness Centre the leading fitness facility in the area.

I always want to know what you think of the Woodlands Fitness Centre - the gym, classes, prices, personal training, and anything else. Please email any feedback and suggestions to the email address at the end of this newsletter.

Many thanks,
Giles

Have you heard about the Caveman diet?

At Woodlands, we're not fans of fad, normally celebrity endorsed diets. We like to stick to what works. And we like the Paleo Diet.

The Paleo diet is the healthiest way you can eat because it is the ONLY nutritional approach that works with your genetics to help you stay lean, strong and energetic! Research in biology, biochemistry, ophthalmology, dermatology and many other disciplines indicate it is our modern diet - which is full of refined foods, trans fats and sugar - that is to blame for a range of degenerative diseases such as obesity, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, depression and infertility.

It's okay to eat fruits, vegetables, lean meats, seafood, nuts & seeds and healthy fats. You must avoid dairy, grains, processed food & sugars, legumes, starches and alcohol.

Lean proteins support strong muscles, healthy bones and optimal immune function. Protein also makes you feel satisfied between meals.

Fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients that have been shown to decrease the likelihood of developing a number of degenerative diseases including cancer, diabetes and neurological decline.

Scientific research and epidemiological studies show that diets rich in Monounsaturated and Omega-3 fats dramatically reduce the instances of obesity, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and cognitive decline. Healthy fats are found in nuts, seeds, avocados, olive oil, fish oil and grass-fed meat.

The Paleo diet combined with an intelligent exercise routine and lifestyle adjustments will help you lose fat, get healthy and live longer. It's Easy!

Over the next few newsletters I'll be elaborating on the health benefits of the Paleolithic / Caveman diet.

Do you never seem to have the time to workout?

Not a week goes by when I don't hear something along the lines of "exercising bores me", "I don't have the energy or motivation to come to the gym" or "I don't have the time to workout".

It is often said that we need something to motivate us into action. This is true. But, I also believe that action creates motivation - especially when we see the results of those actions.

If your workouts aren't working, if that latest fad diet is making you feel bigger instead of smaller, why would you want to sweat in a hard workout? Working out is hard work! Just give up and stay home, right? Wrong!

With the right workout program, High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), body weight training, Strength training, personal training, functional fitness and group personal training, you will see results faster. Those results will look good on you and those results from your actions will create more motivation to continue.

Come and speak to me for more information.

Very Punny

It's hard to explain puns to kleptomaniacs - because they always take things literally!

Why don't you ever see a hippopotamus hiding in trees? Because they're really good at it!

Why can't you hear a pterodactyl going to the toilet? Because the "p" is silent!

Pampered cows produce spoiled milk!
