6 Reasons to See a Physiotherapist

Thursday 19th September 2013

Physiotherapists are qualified to provide a range of beneficial services for all sorts of people. Contrary to the quite popular and misguided belief that physiotherapists only deal with sports injuries and are very good at strapping sprained ankles, physiotherapy is a crucial part of a holistic and comprehensive approach to health and well-being and certainly, a high standard of sports performance.

Essentially, physiotherapy is a physical therapy that is concerned with proper functioning being restored to the body. Physiotherapists also provide professional services to people who have a permanent disease or injury and, in this case, their services help to limit the impacts of physical dysfunction.

There are many very good and important reasons to see a physiotherapist and here we look at six of them:

#1: While physiotherapists do help people with the musculoskeletal injuries and the rehabilitation of muscular pain and sports injuries, physiotherapists also provide assistance to people with neurological problems (including stroke), spinal cord injuries and multiple sclerosis.

#2: Recovery from surgery can be hastened through the provision of physiotherapy. Specific techniques, programs, exercises and therapies can be recommended to people recovering from many different types of surgery and a physiotherapist can show a person how to do these things safely and to achieve maximum benefit. Furthermore, a physiotherapist may also suggest and provide pieces of equipment that can aid recovery.

#3: Many physiotherapists take a holistic approach to health and well-being. Depending on your circumstances, symptoms and presenting problems, a physiotherapist may work in consultation or partnership with other health professionals so that a seamless, multi-faceted and coordinated approach to treatment is provided.

#4: By taking a holistic approach to a person's health and well-being, physiotherapists are skilled in recognising that an injury may be caused by a combination of factors. For example, a person may consult a physiotherapist complaining of back pain. Through a comprehensive assessment, it may be revealed that the person's back pain is the cumulative result of factors such as: poor posture, remaining in one static position for long periods at work, being overweight, not getting enough rest and using a dangerously incorrect technique when participating in sport. With this knowledge, a physiotherapist can then work with the person and offer treatment and advice that addresses all of these problems and at different levels. Not only will the physiotherapist provide treatment for the individual's back pain, they will also address the range of factors that have contributed to the person's back pain and this is significant in reducing the likelihood of the injury re-occurring.

#5: Evidence shows that physiotherapy is an effective treatment for an extensive range of problems, concerns and conditions. Physiotherapy is also important in the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries, conditions and recovery from operations. Depending on your circumstances or the problem that you have, it is possible to consult a physiotherapist that specialises in a particular specialisation, for example paediatrics, women's health or sports medicine.

#6: Physiotherapists are trained and qualified to administer a range of therapies that are appropriately tailored to the person's needs and problems. Physiotherapists provide:

Manual therapies (including stretching, massage, resistance training, manipulation and mobilisation of joints) Electrotherapy techniques (including: ultrasound) services such as taping and splinting, correction of poor or dangerous technique and information in relation to equipment and other aids.

Regardless of whether a person is injured or otherwise fit and well, a physiotherapist can provide a range of beneficial services. With a holistic approach to a person's health and well-being, the client of a physiotherapist should feel confident that their practitioner is qualified and skilled in addressing their most significant concerns and other contributing factors.
