The Woodlands newsletter: Monday 9th April 2018

Monday 9th April 2018

Hi,

Scientists have uncovered a surprising and disturbing fact: environmental toxins make you fat and cause diabetes. Inside the body, these chemicals monkey with our ability to balance blood sugar and metabolize cholesterol. Over time, the changes can lead to insulin resistance. This discovery should be headline news but no one is talking about it. Why? Maybe because there are no drugs to treat it. In the quest to conquer the two biggest epidemics of our time - diabetes and obesity - we've got to turn our attention to the heavy burden environmental toxins put on our bodies.

You need to optimize your body's ability to rid itself of toxins. If your body's detoxification tools aren't working effectively, waste will build up. Overtime, the damage is similar to what happens when bin men go on strike and don't pick up the rubbish off the streets. The waste piles high, making the neighbourhood smell bad and creating a breeding ground for illness.

Don't let the word detoxification turn you off. You may think it sounds like a New-age idea or something from dem der celebs in dat der Hollywood (or Hollyoaks, depending on who you choose to follow on Instagram!) on the heels of an alcohol or drug binge, but detoxification is a normal, every day function. It's the body's way of breaking down and eliminating anything that doesn't belong. And, these days, there are a lot of things our bodies come into contact with that don't belong.

We live in an environment steeped in chemicals that our bodies were not designed to process. In the latest report, scientists at the CDC found that nearly every person they tested was packing a host of nasty chemicals, including flame retardants stored in fatty tissue and Bisphenol A, a hormone-like substance found in plastics, excreted in urine. Even babies are contaminated. The average newborn has numerous chemicals in her umbilical cord blood, of which most are neurotoxic (poisonous to nerves or nerve cells). How harrowing is that?

The good news is that we are all designed to continuously and naturally remove toxins from the body. There are two kinds of toxins: water-soluble and fat-soluble.

Water-soluble toxins are easily flushed out of the body via the blood and kidneys, but the fat-soluble toxins are a challenge for the body to remove.

Fat-soluble toxins such as heavy metals, pesticides, preservatives, food additives, pollutants, plastics and other environmental chemicals must become water-soluble for the body to eliminate them fully.

This happens mostly in the liver, but if our digestive and detox pathways are not functioning optimally, these toxins find their way from the liver to the blood, fat cells, and brain, where they can store for years, setting you up for health concerns down the road. I believe that if we keep our digestion, stress levels and detoxification pathways balanced, we can prevent dangerous chemicals and toxins from storing in our bodies.

This subject is explored later in this newsletter.

Are Toxins Causing You To Have Belly Fat?

Many of my clients ask me "How can I lose fat from my belly, it doesn't seem to budge no matter what I do?"

This is a problem I too have been dealing with, especially as I get older. I understand it can be difficult. You see over the years the toxins build up in our body and our digestive system weakens. This is one of the reasons I do seasonal cleansing - to restore my ability to digest and detoxify.

When you hear ads about slimming a particular area of your body it really is just a gimmick. Your body loses fat in its own way. There isn't a specific way to control where you are going to lose the fat. Soz pal.

What you can do is begin to get rid of the toxins that are being stored in your fat cells. Our bodies continuously detoxify but in our modern age, our bodies simply cannot keep up with the constant daily barrage of environmental and dietary toxins.

There have been 80,000 chemicals introduced into our world since the industrial revolution. They can interfere with your metabolism and cause weight gain even when you eat a healthy diet.

Many of these toxins are fat soluble. If your body can't eliminate the toxins, they wind up getting stored in your fat cells. It surrounds the toxins with fat to protect you.

When you have too many toxins building up in your body they get stored as fat, especially belly fat.

What are some of the places toxins come into our lives?

1. Pesticides in produce
2. Hormones from meat
3. Plastic drinking bottles
4. Phthalates and parabens in skin and hair care products
5. Solvents from cleaning supplies
6. Chemicals that leak into our water supplies

Your liver is responsible for getting rid of these toxins. It is the most important organ in your body for eliminating toxins.

Your liver is working overtime to help you sort the pure from the impure. Yet the liver is one of your body's major multi-taskers. As a modern day woman you know about multi-tasking. Just like you, your liver is trying to keep pace with modern-day life. It has much to do.

Let's take a peek at the many tasks for your liver. . .

1. It produces and secretes bile to aid in the digestion of fats
2. It manages your carbohydrate metabolism, converting excess glucose for storage and later use, and secreting it as needed
3. It's involved in hormonal regulation, breaking down and discarding excess circulating hormones
4. It filters the blood, scanning for toxins, destroying and disposing of them

And this is why you should cleanse your liver! In next week's newsletter I will talk about the detoxifying powers of cilantro.

Saag paneer recipe

Ingredients:

1 tbsp vegetable oil
200g (7oz) paneer, cubed
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1 tbsp grated ginger
1 tsp garam masala
1/4 tsp turmeric
1 tsp tomato purée
300g (10oz) spinach leaves
4 tbsp yogurt

Method:

Saag paneer is a classic vegetarian Indian dish of cooked spinach studded with cubes of fried paneer cheese, authentic Indian spices such as garam masala and turmeric all combined with creamy yogurt. Serve this wonderfully velvety curry with some basmati rice and tangy chutney.

Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan. Then add the paneer and cook for 3-5 minutes, turning often, until golden brown all over. Add the garlic, ginger, garam masala, turmeric and tomato purée to the pan and cook for 2 minutes, until the paneer is well coated.

Add the spinach leaves and cook for a couple of minutes until beginning to wilt. Stir in the yogurt, a tbsp at a time, and cook until the spinach is soft.

A person cannot taste food unless it is mixed with saliva. For example, if a strong-tasting substance like salt is placed on a dry tongue, the taste buds will not be able to taste it. As soon as a drop of saliva is added and the salt is dissolved, however, a definite taste sensation results. This is true for all foods.
