What's New?

Over the last few weeks I've started allocating more of my time to group personal training. Whether you join a workout group or get your own group of friends together for a workout, there are many reasons more is merrier when you're working out.

Some people are naturally self motivated. And then there are those who are not. The majority of the people I've worked with over the years have had the same problem. That's one of the great things about the Unlimited Group Sessions. Many people who attend a group session will show up exhausted from the ups and downs of everyday life. But once they join the group, they become re-energized. With a friendly fitness instructor there to light a fire under you rear, it can't get any better.

Not only are you more motivated to exercise - but there's the motivation to improve your current fitness level. If you work out with people who are faster, stronger or fitter than you, you are probably going to get in better shape.

Human beings are social creatures. Yes, there are a few are hermits and recluses - but the majority of us love to be around other people. We love to laugh, joke and have fun. I feel this is one of the greatest aspects of a group workout setting.

Many people sign up to get more fit - but they make friends along the way.

Joining a workout group can keep you motivated, hold you accountable and help you develop a sense of group camaraderie. We live in a world where we've become so dependent on technology: Email. Texting. Facebook. Snapchat. Instagram. Pinterest. Tinder. As such, genuine, real world human interaction is slowly disappearing. So, working out with a group gets you away from that.

With group fitness, you have to get involved. You can try to escape to the corner of the gym - but I'll integrate you into the group. Whether you like or not. That's why it's called group dynamics. And that's why technology will never replace the good old fashioned group workout. You never know, you might just meet some "real" friends instead of the ones you find online.

Do You blame your genes?

Burning off fat is pretty much one of the main reasons for joining a gym. We appreciate there are other goals: rehabilitation, increasing fitness, hypertrophy etc. But fat loss is one of the major goals. Especially at this time of year. So I've put together a list of the 10 reasons why you're not losing fat. Don't forget it's not your body weight that's an issue - it's your fat weight. Reason 9: You blame your genes

Genetics give us a shedload of excuses, including metabolism, 'big bones' and an underactive thyroid. In fact, only around one per cent of people have a fault in their DNA - a hormone, glandular or chromosomal disorder - that means their metabolism does not function normally.

Being overweight is very much about bad eating habits and learned behaviour. If you're overweight, the chances are that your parents are, too. But don't assume this is genetic - it's far more likely that you have inherited their eating habits and lifestyle.

Your genes do have a certain influence on your figure - for example, the body shape scientists call 'endomorph' is more prone to collecting weight around the abdomen - but they don't make you overweight in the first place, if you don't eat the food.

If you are aware you have an underactive thyroid your GP, which is a serious medical condition, he will have put you on medication to counter it, so it's no excuse for stuffing your face with cakes.

Remember that being overweight is about what you eat, not the DNA that made you. Chances are you eat more than you realise.

Black bean potato nachos

Ingredients:

700g King Edwards potatoes, scrubbed, cut into thin round slices
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp smoked paprika
100g extra mature cheddar, grated
400g can black beans, drained and rinsed
½ small pack coriander, roughly chopped

For the red pepper salsa:

20g pickled jalapeños, chopped
100g roasted red peppers, chopped
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 small red onion, finely chopped

Method:

Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/ gas 8. Line two large baking sheets with baking parchment. Brush the potato slices with oil, season and sprinkle over the paprika. Bake for 10-15 mins until completely crisp.

Reduce oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Transfer half the crisps to an ovenproof dish, layer with half the beans and cheese, then repeat. Return to the oven for 10 mins until the cheese melts.

Meanwhile, mix all the salsa ingredients and season. Top the nachos with salsa and coriander.
