What's New?

We've been really busy over the last few weeks and I've not had time to write the Woodlands newsletter. When I started writing this edition the downstairs walls were in the process of coming down. They're down and the gym is now much larger. In terms of floor area, it's not that different to our previous facility at Peak Village.

The next job is to remove the suspended ceiling. The downstairs ceiling height isn't quite tall enough for some of the taller lads to smash out some overhead barbells presses.

New classes / group sessions timetable:

Over the last few years I have been putting together a spreadsheet of every exercise I can think of. There are currently 726 exercises on it. There are over 120 variations of lunges. Forward lunge. Reverse lunge. Side lunge. Lunge with a hat on. The list goes on. All of these exercises are divided into various categories for classes and personal training.

If you're going to attend a class, make sure the class is appropriate for your individual needs. Will it actually help you achieve your goals? There's a direct correlation between effort and calories burned. If the class is easy you're not going to get much out of it.

I've designed the Woodlands classes and group sessions to find a balance between a fun and sociable class environment with the expert attention that comes with a personal training session.

Our classes and group sessions feature a range of training methods - all created to challenge each area of the body in a time-efficient and effective way.

All classes are included in our normal membership fee.

New PT prices:

These are our new prices for personal training. We will also be offering a discount for members to renew their personal training package before they've used up their current sessions. So, we have 2 prices: the normal price and early renewal.

Here are a few examples using our most popular PT packages:

8 x 30 minute PT sessions
£85 (early renewal)

We use time limits with our personal training packages to encourage frequent and consistent training. Packages can be designed to your individual needs. We can adjust the time limits in advance to take into account holidays, business trips, etc.

All PT packages include full gym / classes / group sessions membership.

Losing weight is simple; we need to create a calorific deficit which means burn off more calories than we take in. However, losing weight and losing fat are two very different things and can easily get mixed up.

The majority of people are impatient and want to lose weight fast. Since they have little or no knowledge of diet, nutrition and how metabolism works, they think that by starving themselves, or eating as little as possible will make them lose fat quickly and give them the body they desire.

This will result in a quick weight drop - but most of the weight lost will be water, muscle and a very small portion of fat. For every 1g of glycogen burned off, 3g of water is lost. This can result in a steep drop in weight rather quickly. The article below should encourage you to make long-term, sustainable changes to your diet.

Are you always dieting?

Burning off fat is pretty much one of the main reasons for joining a gym. We appreciate there are other goals: rehabilitation, increasing fitness, hypertrophy etc. But fat loss is one of the major goals. Especially at this time of year. So I've put together a list of the 10 reasons why you're not losing fat. Don't forget it's not your body weight that's an issue - it's your fat weight. Reason 3: You're always dieting.

Diet and you will lose weight? That's true - up to a point. The problem is that diets are, by their very nature, restrictive and therefore unsustainable. Ultimately it doesn't matter whether you do Atkins, SlimFast or the Holistic Standing On Your Head Eating Nothing But Figs Diet - any weight-loss plan operates by limiting what you eat, whether it's by slashing calories, removing entire food groups or forcing you to live on milk shakes.

In the short term, of course, the weight falls off, you can tighten your belt an extra notch and your shirt buttons no longer pop. 'Great,' you think, 'I've lost weight, so I can go back to eating normally again.' And before you know it the weight has piled back on and you're back where you started. This is known as 'yo yo dieting'. The real secret to losing weight is not to give up fast food and beer for two weeks. It's to make long-term, sustainable changes to your diet. The weight will take longer to come off, but if you do it this way it will stay off.


Pan Fried Haddock

Ingredients:

2 eight ounce filets of Haddock
1/4 cup of egg whites (or 1 egg beaten)
1/3 cup of almond flour
2 teaspoons of garlic salt
1 tablespoon of Italian seasoning
1 tablespoon of coconut oil

Directions:

In a small bowl mix the almond flour, garlic salt, and Italian seasoning until thoroughly mixed

In another bowl, put you egg white (or beaten egg).

Dredge your filets in the egg wash then coat with the bread crumbs.

Heat a small frying pan with the coconut oil for about a minute after it's melted.

Now fry both sides of your fish until golden brown and serve

These pan fried filets are great to use for fish tacos as well. They are very light and flaky. Enjoy!
